Classes for Kids (year-round):

DATES:
Enrollment is ongoing throughout the year. Choose a day/time below. Initial
sign up is for one month/four weeks (one hour class per week).
Classes
meet one hour per week and provide engaging topical chess lessons, short
video tutorials, puzzles, examples from grandmaster games and other fun
activities in a proven learning curriculum aligned with US Chess Federation
recommendations.

Students
choosing to continue beyond initial four weeks do so on a month-to-month
basis. Payment is automatic once per month ensuring enrollment for that
month of classes.
ALSO
INCLUDES: Hamden Chess Club membership with reduced entry fee for in-person
tournaments; free entry in weekly online tournaments. It includes PMCA
Private Online Chess Club for optional casual games (with classmates and
other PMCA students) each week.

Chess Club Membership Rates:
-Adults:
$100/year
-Scholastic
(K-12) $80/year
HCC club members of all ages and chess abilities can join the Hamden Chess
Club and find opportunities to play both casual and tournament chess,
both Over-the-Board (OTB) and online.
Both
yearly and monthly payment options are available. Membership will renew
automatically at the end of the period unless canceled.
As
of April 2023 HCC has over 160 members and weekly casual play attendance
is 12 to 20 on a typical Monday or Thursday evening.

Benefits:
Discounted
entry fees on USCF Rated Tournaments each month:
-USCF
Scholastic (Grades K-12 of any chess rating, including Unrated).
-G/45 and G/75 USCF tournaments for adults (ages 13+) of any rating, including
Unrated. Under 13 eligible if USCF rating of 700+.
-Monthly
USCF Action Quads tournaments. For adults (ages 13+) of any rating, including
Unrated. Under 13 eligible if USCF rating of 700+. Opportunity to play
three rated games in one evening. Usually on 3rd Monday evening of month
6:30-9:30pm
Weekly
Online Tournaments:
Free entry for HCC members. Members of any age who enjoy online play can
participate in our weekly online tournaments on Lichess.org for various
rating levels (usually Mon., Wed., & Sat). A
$20 Amazon gift card goes to the first place winner if membership is in
good standing and the tournament had a minimum of four HCC participants.

Twice
Weekly Casual Play: HCC members can play free, most Mondays and Thursdays,
6:30-8:30pm, ($10 day rate for visitors/non-members). (Note: 3rd Mondays
of a month are reserved for Monthly Action Quads tournament which requires
advance registration). Under age 13 may participate if they have a USCF
rating of 800+.

Online
tournaments are for all ages. Wednesday tournaments open to all rating
levels; Mon and Sat tournaments are restricted based on rating levels
as listed on tournament page; No entry fee for online tournaments but
must be HCC member or enrolled chess student who has requested to join
and been accepted to the HCC team on Lichess prior to the tournament.
($20 Gift Card prize for online tournament winner if tournament has four
or more players. Winner must be HCC current member in good standing or
currently enrolled PMCA chess student to claim a prize):

by National Master Jordan Groff (Coach Jordan)

include eight training sessions (Pizza/"Prep Rallies")
held the Sunday before each tournament 4:00-7:00PM A lesson with Coach
Jordan followed by training games with teammates and pizza! Team members
are encouraged to attend training sessions even if it doesn't suit them
to go to the following week's tournament.
- Team
Camaraderie: Team members can hang out at tournaments and review
games. Big tournaments can be intimidating for newer players, but being
with a group of friends helps alot!

members are encouraged to attend as many of the eight tournaments and

Note: Once your gift certificate payment is received you will receive
an attractive 8.5" x 11" gift certificate with Recipient Name,

A copy of the certificate will be kept on file at the studio until the
