Hamden Chess Club:

Hamden Chess Club Membership Rates (Scroll down for sign up form):

  • Adults (ages 18-64): $120/year
  • Senior (age 65+) $100/year
  • Scholastic (grades K-12) $100/year

  • Visitors/guests can pay a day rate of $10 (i.e. to participate in a Casual Play evening)
Chess players of all ages and chess abilities can join the Hamden Chess Club and find opportunities to play both casual and tournament chess, both Over-the-Board (OTB) and online.

Members typically join for one year, but monthly payment and daily options are also available. Membership will renew automatically at the end of yearly or monthly subscription period unless canceled. Membership can be canceled at any time prior to renewal.


As of November 2023 HCC has 142 club members that participate regularly in weekly casual play and online and over-the-board tournaments at Play More Chess Academy. Weekly casual play evenings typically have about 16-20 attendees.


Hamden Chess Club (HCC) is an affiliate (#A6054128) of US Chess that meets at the Play More Chess Academy for casual play, tournaments and special events. HCC was named 2021 Chess Club of the Year by the Connecticut State Chess Association.

Twice Weekly Casual Play:
HCC members can play free, most Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30-8:30PM, ($10 day rate for visitors/guests). Scholastic Members under age 13 may participate in casual play evenings if they have a USCF rating of 700+ and are accompanied by an adult). Casual play is free for club members and guests can purchase a $10 member day pass at the door. On the 3rd Monday evening of most months there is our Monthly Action Quads Tournament which requires advance registration. (There is no casual play on those Mondays).

Discounted Entry Fees on USCF Rated Tournaments each month:
Sign up for upcoming in-person OTB tournaments by visiting the Events page. HCC members receive a discounted entry fees on in-person tournaments (up to $10/tournament). HCC typically organizes and hosts three to four USCF tournaments per month including at least one Scholastic tournament per month.

Titled players (NM and higher) receive honorary club membership and free (early) entry to tournaments, with entry fee deducted from prize.

Weekly Online Tournaments:
Free entry for HCC members. Members of any age who enjoy online play can participate in our weekly online tournaments on Lichess.org for various rating levels (usually Mon., Wed., & Sat).
A $20 Amazon gift card goes to the first place winner if membership is in good standing and the tournament had a minimum of four HCC participants. Upcoming online tournaments and additional details are listed at: https://lichess.org/team/hamden-chess-club.

Free Weekly HCC Online Tournaments (Tournament Access and Prizes)
HCC members, including currently enrolled Play More Chess Academy students, may join the Hamden Chess Club on the lichess.org platform and play chess casually with each other and also participate in our weekly online club tournaments.
Online tournaments are held Mondays (Beginners-Max blitz rating 1500), Wednesdays (Advanced-Open to any rating level); and Saturdays (Intermediate-Max rating of 2000); Entry eligibility for online tournaments is based on participant chess rating on lichess and is free for HCC members.

A $20 prize, (usually an Amazon gift card) goes to the first place winner for tournaments that have at least four HCC participants. If there are less than four participants no prize will be awarded. Winner must have an annual HCC membership in good standing or be currently enrolled as a Play More Chess Academy student to receive a prize. (HCC members are eligible to win online prizes up to 2X their membership fee during their membership year). There is no limit to online tournament prize winnings for currently enrolled students.

To participate in an online tournament, first create a free account on lichess.org. Then send a "Join Team" request to Hamden Chess Club Team and include your real name with your join request. Once you are verified as a current HCC member or currently enrolled PMCA student you will be able to join any of our online tournaments and be eligible to win a tournament prize.

Special Events - Lectures, Simuls, Open Houses, Author events
Club members are first to know and be invited to other special events such as GM lectures and simuls, open houses with refreshments, author events/book-signings. HCC Club Members receive either a discount or free entry, depending on the event.
